Writing Content for Web-based Documents
Writing content online is quite different from writing in print. Because online users have more options for accessibility, you have to make different choices in online writing. Here are some general Universal Design guidelines for writing web content:
- Use consistent heading hierarchies to break up information. This will help guide readers around your site as well as let them know when new topics start and stop.
- Write the most important information at the top of the page or paragraph. Since online readers are usually looking for specific information, having the most important information first saves them time.
- Write more concisely on the Web than in print. Generally, writing half the number of words you would in print is a good idea.
- Give people the information they need. Often, web content will be task-based, so break up content into topics, not chapters like a book.
- Provide links that help explain content that may be unfamiliar to your audience.
